Gold is down today, a trend I expect to continue as folks trade in their gold for cash this holiday season. I absolutely love it! It is recycling and I love that people are finding the extra cash they need right in their jewelry boxes. Another thing to appreciate is that the supply is never going to “flood” the market or “dry up completely”. I expect the supply chain of recycled gold to be steady with peaks and valleys corresponding to the times when people are most likely to need extra cash.

One concern I have is for the welfare of gold miners. We are always going to need newly mined gold, but just not as much of it. What is going to happen to the laborers who are viewed as disposable by these large gold mining operations? Probably what has happened to every other “disposable” laborer when their respective market tightened up. I am hoping that at least one of these companies realizes what companies like Starbucks, Costco, and a small handful of others have: It isn’t all about the bottom line, and when we all do better, we all do better. …..It could happen.

Is Gold Heading For a Correction?

Gold is down a bit today, but at $1154 a troy ounce we are still looking at unprecedented prices for the commodity. There are well-paid theorists that say gold is headed for a correction, and some that say we haven’t seen anything yet. I say the best way to gauge the market is by using good ol’ common sense. What I see that is different these days than in years past are the sources of raw material. In the past people have looked to gold mines as the source of raw gold. Today we are also getting gold from the public. People are turning in their gold for cash, much less cash than the people who are melting it down are getting for it. So what this tells me is that we have found a new source of cheap gold. It is much cheaper to buy gold at a discount from the public than to harvest it from the earth. The costs of smelting are nothing compared to the costs of mining. Mined gold, by the way, also must be smelted. Seems to me that this new found supply is pretty much endless. I mean, it’s recycling; remember the triangle circle printed on the recycling bins? Which leads me to the common sense conclusion that gold is indeed headed for a correction.

Rising gold prices are affecting the new Jewelry market. Anything made of gold is going to be pricey if you are buying brand new. The second-hand market is still quite reasonable. There are also bargains available on the internet. It is exciting to watch an industry that has been stagnate for decades evolving. I particularly like the use and growing popularity of semi-precious stones. There are so many different colors to choose from. It tells me that people are tapping into their creativity rather than blindly feeding their egos. By that I mean that for far too long, jewelry was valued on the “size of the rock”.
